Embodiment: What, Why, and Who Cares?

Dear human,

As some of you have noticed, I have been talking a lot about reconnecting with our bodies lately. In this blog, I figured I would put some words to what embodiment is and why I am so obsessed with it.

What is embodiment?

In short, embodiment is connecting with, and inhabiting, the internal felt senses and intelligence of your body.

Since birth, our bodies learn how to process and respond to the world in ways that make us feel safe, connected, and respected. And while those patterns serve us in our upbringing, they can also keep us stuck as we get older and sense that we may be living and acting in ways that do not align to who we really are and how we want to live, parent, work, or show up in the world.

For example, I grew up in a family and culture that largely did not tolerate emotions. As a result, my body learned early on to hold in tears, to contract, and to shrink.

For me to live as an adult who can access my own emotions, express myself, and take up space, I had to reconnect with how that conditioning lives in my body, release those patterns, and relearn how to embody the self that I want to be.

Why embodiment?

When we disconnect from our bodies, we abandon ourselves.

When we are stuck in our heads, we become burnt out, stressed, overwhelmed, sick, and stuck.

When we interpret our physical and emotional pain as something to fix or ignore, we cannot access the medicine, wisdom, joy, pleasure, and aliveness within.

When we do not listen to our bodies, we live from unconscious conditioning and patterns, reacting instead of responding.

Sometimes, we do need to go, and act, and do. And other times, we need to feel, to sense, to discern what’s going on underneath. Embodiment allows us access to feel, to release, and to choose.

Embodiment brings us alive, from the inside out.

Who cares?

Let’s be honest. We are going through a collective shift, and there is a lot of shit going on that doesn’t sound good. People are hurting, and the world is hurting too.

It is time for a collective change.

It is time to slow down, feel, heal, and move forward in connection to our humanity, to each others’ humanity, and to our inherent connection to this earth of which we are inherently a part.

Coming home to our bodies can be painful. If you have spent years ignoring and suppressing like I have, actually inhabiting your inner sensations will bring up sadness, anger, and grief.

AND.

If we allow ourselves to feel those feelings, knowing that we are safe and meeting ourselves with compassion, we find our own truth. Our peace, power and pleasure, our wisdom and our worth, our magic and our joy - we search for them all over, but they really do lie within.

Whether it’s for yourself, your children, communities you serve, or the world, coming home to our bodies is how we reclaim our humanity from systems that would have us be robots.

When we bring our full, connected, embodied selves to our relationships, our work, and our communities, we stand firmly rooted in who we are and what we stand for.

When we reclaim that we are not just machines that “do” but beings that “feel”, we put an end to cycles of dehumanization and harm.

We heal for those that came before, for ourselves, and for those that will come after.

While I have done a lot of feeling and healing on my own, I have found that the most powerful and transformative healing happens when I am held and supported by someone who can guide me into my body and hold that space with me while allowing me to feel what needs to be felt and hear the wisdom underneath. It is why I have chosen to be this person for others.

If this resonates with you, let me know and if you are curious to learn more about how you can start or continue reconnecting with your body, get in touch - I would be so happy to set up a free time to connect.

Much embodied healing, warmth and love to all. <3
